Featured Member: DeAnna Morgan

KAEA would like to start featuring members from across the state in semi-regular blog posts to share some of the amazing things happening in Kansas art education and to shine a spotlight on members. Our first featured member is DeAnna Morgan.
DeAnna Morgan, center, with students after winning the Pioneer League Art Competition this spring.

Interview with DeAnna Morgan

Where are you from? Fontana, Ks
Where did you earn your degree(s) and what are they?
I have a BSED in Art Education with a minor in Special Education from Pittsburg State University
Tell us about your teaching situation- where, what grades, how long have you been there?
I am the only Art Teacher at Wellsville USD 289 teaching grades 7-12. This is my second year here.
How long have you been a KAEA member? I have been a member since I was a student at Pitt State, three years.
How have you benefited from KAEA membership?
NETWORKING. I never realized how much you can learn from others in your field until I joined. From lesson plans, to media tips and tricks, to connecting across the state for collaborative projects- it's been a great resource. It's such a great organization and I cherish opportunities to meet and work with colleagues.
What is your favorite thing about being an art teacher?
Seeing that moment when a student sits back and smiles and says, "I've done it. I've finished this artwork. Isn't it great?" When a student sees their progress and how proud they are of their hard work, those are the moments I look forward to every day.
What is your most memorable moment from teaching?
My most memorable moment was this last week when my Art Department won the first place title of our Pioneer League Art Competition over Prairie View's seven year streak. They worked incredibly hard all year and competed with phenomenal projects. We came home with three of the five best of show ribbons. The best part is that they were so humble about their win and that is when you know you're teaching your students right.
One piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in art education?
Just starting out in college?- take special education classes they will help you more than you think. Interventions and accommodations take on another meaning when working in art media and it's important to learn things to help you be successful. First year teacher- Keep a journal, write down things that work, throw out things that don't. It's okay for things to go bad once in a while, you learn, gain experience, and better your craft.
What is a tip or trick you’d like to share? To keep your supplies from walking off, make students give you a shoe to 'check out' an eraser, pencil, compass, or xacto blade. When you get your supplies back, they in return can get their shoe. It has saved me a lot of worry about running out of things and the kids get a good giggle walking around lopsided too.

Thanks, DeAnna, for sharing!

YAM CD Weaving Installation

Three schools (Hutchinson, Oxford, and Wellsville) from across Kansas met today at the Kansas Capitol in Topeka to complete a CD weaving installation sculpture. The students worked from 9:00a until 11:30a tying the individual weavings together into a large tapestry. There were nearly 600 weavings between all of the participating schools (those unattended were Pittsburg State University, Troy, and Osawatomie).
The weavings will be in the capitol until Saturday, March 7th for the celebration of Youth Art Month. Parents and students are encouraged to attend!

I hope you will mark your calendars and join the Kansas State University College of Education Art Education program, the KSU Beach Museum of Art, and the Strecker-Nelson Art Gallery for Aprendiendo del Arte-Learning from Art. The event is February 17th and 18th. Professional Development Hours will be given for attendance at the art making workshops and speaking sessions. The art making workshops are $10 for non-KSU faculty and students just to help cover cost of supplies. Please email Trina Harlow, KSU Art Education Instructor and the event planner for more information! This is going to be an over-the-top amazing, global, artsy event! Take a half day off and come join us....or a whole day off! Or come after work on February 17 for the art making workshop! The workshops will give K-12 art educators, higher Ed educators, and art enthusiasts great insight into colorful, Hispanic, globally inspired art and you'll go home from the workshop with many ideas and finished art works that you make. Everyone who attends will be given a link to great lesson plans, slide shows, and other information. You can also bring high school students with you!

Cilau Valadez, a world renowned Huichol yarn painter and Agustin Cruz Prudencio, a Oaxacan wood carver and painter, both from Mexico, will be joining the COE Art Education program for two days of special events. Also attending is Nancy Walkup, the editor of SchoolArts Magazine and NAEA Elementary Division Director, and the Texas and Louisiana Teacher of the Year.

There will be 2 art making workshops, 3 speaking sessions, and 2 receptions for the general public, including Kansas art educators.

I hope, if at all possible, you will attend these events. I would like to give our guests a warm KANSAS welcome, attended by many area art teachers, and hope you will attend any and all events that you can! There will be many benefits for educators who attend any of these sessions! Please email Trina Harlow at tharlow@ksu.edu, KSU Art Education Instructor, for more information, an event program to be emailed to you, or to reserve your space at the art making workshops. The speaking sessions and receptions do not require reservations.

Youth Art MONTH
Help Kansas celebrate the visual arts by putting up an art display in your school, a school board meeting or somewhere in your community.  Make sure that you mention that March is Youth Art Month.  Add some advocacy materials and put up the National Visual Arts Standards.  Call your local paper or add something to your school website, newsletter, or newspaper.  Get some coverage for your students and your art program....be your own best advocate!  Share all of your accomplishments with us by documenting what you have done and send that information to Megan Wendleton at meganwendleton@hotmail.com so that we can include you in our YAM report.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you who spend countless hours encouraging Kansas kids to embrace their inner artists.  YOU are making a difference in student's lives!
Let's Celebrate Youth Art Month together!!
